While you’re reading this I’m out on a shoot for work. So I don’t have too much to offer here. I will note that I’ve been reading Perramus: The City and Oblivion by Breccia and Sasturain (available from Fantagraphics) which is a pretty fantastic read, I’ll have to write something about it once I’m done and have a chance to do a little more research on the historical context of the book. But ultimately, it’s about three people roaming through a country’s collapse into/life under authoritarianism. I think there’s a lot that remains very relevant and impactful today. If you can pick it up - I suggest you do - Breccia’s art is wonderful - it’s abstract and dreamlike, really love it.
Also if you are enjoying this newsletter, I’ve begun posting original art for sale on my website, so if you’re interested and want to support my art and comics - please consider buying some original art. I’ll be updating it over the next few weeks with some comics pages and possibly a commission option.
Here’s this week’s Unspeakable strip:
You can see I finally made the switch to hand lettering here. When I was drawing these strips I was forcing myself to do one-a-day, I’d like to get back into doing that soon.
And here’s the “page 2” of the print-edition:
Basically a title page. At some point I’ll have to write something about Frank Miller’s much maligned Holy Terror because I do find myself pulling some graphic inspiration from that book. Also I think it has a value as an emotional time capsule of a specific moment, The Unspeakable is an expression of a frustration and angry as a result to the decisions made at that time.
And if original art is a bit outside your budget - please consider grabbing a copy of my graphic novella “Ghosts of the Carousel” which was published by Dauntless Stories last year. It’s a work I’m really proud of - and hope you’ll give it a chance.
