Hi - been a minute since I’ve updated this ‘stack, but figure it’s time.
Here’s my plan for the year - I’m working on a new book, it’s very different from the last two, it’s got a bit of a fantasy/swords setting and is heavier on “action” there’s still some deeper themes I’m hoping to pull out of it and explore, but my plan is to have it be an exercise in pacing, mood, atmosphere, violence, and maybe a little sex too. We’ll see. I kind of want to make something that’s very R-rated. I’ll document my process on this substack here and more infrequently on my new column… speaking of…
Remso (I was on his show Second Print Comics talking about House on Fire) hit me up late 2023 about doing a column over at Bounding into Comics. (Side note: I know Remso from the “libertarian world” that I work in over at Free the People) Previously I’d have been more hesitant as my past forays into comics writing for places that are in that sphere have led me to write more “newsy takes” that I’m less and less comfortable with - but I’ve been given free reign to write on whatever topics or books are of interest to me. So it’s been really freeing and I hope to bring some nuanced views to what’s going on in comics but also review books that I’m reading and enjoying. So far I’ve written about some recent movies (The Killer, Killers of the Flower Moon, and there’s a bunch of rapid fire comics reviews at the end) I also covered the recent dust-up about the “comics industry” as well as a long dive into Ronin Book 2, I caught the new Turtles movie on a flight and reflected on the malleability of those characters, and I wrote a review of the latest Brubaker/Phillips/Phillips book Where the Body Was. I have a review of Batman: Gargoyle of Gotham forthcoming and I'm planning to write a long piece on Transformers: Generation 2 and the new Daniel Warren Johnson Transformers book.
I hope you check out the column!
This Substack will likely be the home of all my creative process stuff and all my reviews and “takes” will wind up on Bounding into Comics.
Definitely interested in what you have to say about Gargoyle. Looking forward to it!
Have you read it?
