What I’m Reading
No new updates on my reading list at the moment - I did finish Slum Wolf, and I think I can put my finger on what works with it. The book is composed of a selection of short stories that all dance around strict narratives - they are slices of life at the margins of post-war Japan and they feel kind of poetic in a way. I found a kindred spirit with the storytelling in it - Tadao Tsuge seems to be more interested in conjuring up an atmosphere and a mood, he wants you to sit in this world that he remembers from his youth. I wouldn’t recommend it to everyone, it doesn’t have a tight narrative running throughout there are a few “characters” but they’re thinly sketched - so it really asks the reader to just be immersed in each short and just pull something out of the experience. I think it’s a great vibe and mood and a kind of storytelling that can only work in comics where you can feel a truly personal connection with the artist through their line.
