Sorry for the delay in posts, I’ve been deep in the hole editing a new documentary for work. It’s a profile on Carlos Luna an artist born in Cuba who now lives Miami, it was a really great experience getting to learn a bit about his work, his process, and hang out in a real-deal fine artist’s studio. Inspirational experience for sure - it was a whirlwind two-day shoot, hopefully we’ll be able to expand further on the project and get a few more days worth of shooting. While filming with Carlos and researching his work - I really learned quite a bit about how to read a painting. His pieces have a very specific visual language to them that is all his own and the way he tells his stories with that is very similar to a comics style of storytelling. Something else I really loved about his work was the level of texture that he builds up on each piece, rather than creating depth with perspective he builds it with textures and varnish and even sanding his paintings. They’re pieces that benefit from experiencing in person, partly due to the large scale of many of them, but also the tactile nature of each painting is impossible to fully appreciate in a photo.
I will be sure to update with a link when it’s public.
For now here’s the next few pages of Crimson.
Cliffhanger!
I’ll be in Prague(!!!) next week filming for work, which I’m really looking forward to, one of my favorite things to do when traveling is to check out their comic book shops, expect a report from my trip’s comics shop excursion. I’m trying to collect Corto Maltese books in different languages, you can almost always find them, and each country has a different format for them. So far I have Italian and Greek copies.
Nice harsh dialogue here!
